Machimoodus State Park in East Haddam, Connecticut, occupies a scenic stretch along the Salmon River and Salmon Cove near Moodus. Its name preserves the memory of a large Wangunk village once located in or near this area; Machimoodus is usually translated as “the place of noises,” referring to sounds later identified as echoes of microearthquakes. The nearby village of Moodus also inherited that Indigenous name. Connecticut created the park in 1998 after purchasing Echo Farm, and later acquisition of neighboring Sunrise State Park expanded the surrounding protected land. Known for hiking, fishing, picnicking, horseback riding, and Mount Tom overlooks, the park combines recreation, scenery, and enduring local history.
