Dix Mountain Wilderness Area was the former name of a rugged tract in New York’s Forest Preserve within the Adirondack Park, spanning parts of Elizabethtown, Keene, and North Hudson. Known for steep cliffs, rocky mountains, several summits above 4,000 feet, trailless high peaks, ponds, and Chapel Pond’s climbing destination, it combined a remote character with maintained trails and lean-tos. The Adirondack Fire of 1903 heavily shaped its landscape, stripping upper slopes and influencing later forest recovery. Over time, New York expanded and connected the area through major land acquisitions, and in 2018 it was merged into the neighboring High Peaks Wilderness Area.
