Giant Mountain Wilderness Area is a protected part of the New York Forest Preserve in Adirondack Park, spanning Elizabethtown and Keene and including Giant Mountain, Rocky Peak Ridge, two small waters, thirty-three miles of trails, and one lean-to. Designated wilderness in 1972, it had already been deeply altered by nineteenth-century logging, later state reacquisition, destructive fires in 1903, 1908, and 1909, and landslides caused by a 1963 storm. The 1903 fire exposed bare rock still visible high on Giant Mountain and Rocky Peak Ridge. Since then, the forest has recovered into varied elevations and habitats, while the area remains a popular destination for hikers and hunters.
