Dix Mountain is one of the Adirondacks’ major summits, rising 4,857 feet as New York’s sixth-highest peak and one of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks. In the Dix Range of the High Peaks Wilderness, it is known for a narrow ridge that extends from the main summit to Beckhorn and south along the range. Its alpine summit above treeline offers broad views of Elk Lake, the Great Range, Lake Champlain, and the Green Mountains. First reportedly climbed in 1807 during a town-line survey, it was named in 1837 for John Adams Dix. Rugged trails and prominent slide scars add to its reputation as a memorable hiking destination.
