In 1819, the white cross was mounted to the tiny log building that served Bishop Fenwick as his first cathedral in Cincinnati, and it was understood to have been the first cross erected in the state of Ohio. The cross was later retired to Brown County, where it greeted Julia Chatfield and her companions on their arrival in 1845. On a June morning, as the weary travelers ate lunch on a grassy open spot, Miss Matilda Dunn remarked, “This is a pretty knoll.” They could not then foresee the bitter January cold when they would lay on that spot their first-born-to-heaven, a young sister.
