Along the banks of the South Concho River, Confederate veterans of the War Between the States gathered in reunion beginning in 1902. They were members of the United Confederate Veterans Colorado—Concho Confederate Reunion Association and the Mountain Remnant Brigade, with local camps including the Schuyler Sutton Camp 1663, Richard Coke Camp 600, and Henry McCulloch Camp 557. Many prominent local men served as commanders of these organizations, including John O. Frink, Texas Division UCV Commander, Z.I. Williams, J.M. Israel, and Frank Van Horn. Veterans camped in tents, and musical entertainment, dancing, old songs, generous meals, and business meetings filled the three days of their annual camaraderie. Union veterans also attended, programs were organized under the auspices of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and Mrs. Bettie Magruder, beloved MRB historian, was a prominent force in the gathering for many years. The last Christoval Confederate reunion was held in 1934.
