Battlement Mesa

Battlement Mesa is a prominent western Colorado landform extending about 15 miles along the boundary between Garfield and Mesa counties, between the Colorado River and Plateau Creek and south of Interstate 70 between Rifle and Parachute. The nearby community of Battlement Mesa was named for it. Geologically similar to Grand Mesa and the Roan Cliffs, it consists largely of a basalt cap over older sedimentary layers, including part of the Green River Formation. This structure creates its broad, elevated shape and makes it a distinctive feature of the surrounding landscape.
