Cedar Mountain is a prominent wilderness summit in Montana’s Madison Range, in the Rocky Mountains, rising to 10,780 feet on a west summit beside a slightly lower east peak. In the cirque below lie Cedar Lake and Cedar Falls, features that help define the mountain’s distinctive setting. Its relief is especially steep, climbing sharply above Cedar Lake and towering far above the Madison Valley. Runoff from the mountain flows west toward the Madison River through Cedar, Mill, and Bear creeks. With a subarctic climate of long, very cold winters and short summers, Cedar Mountain is chiefly valued for its high elevation, rugged relief, and striking basin landscape.
