A Bald Eagle sculpture honors U.S. service personnel from all military branches who served in war and peace. John F. Kennedy said, “The fierce beauty and proud independence of this great bird aptly symbolizes the strength and freedom of America.” William “Bill” P. Roth, remembered here in memory, was born on January 28, 1921, and died on April 21, 2016. He enlisted with the Iowa Army National Guard on October 21, 1940. His unit was called up during World War II to defend the country. He was captured in North Africa by the German Army and held as a prisoner of war from February 17, 1943, to April 26, 1945, for 800 days. After the war, he remained in the Iowa Army National Guard and retired with the rank of Sergeant First Class on December 22, 1965. A gift from Bill Roth to the Audubon Lions Club was used for this tribute.
