The John J. Scotton Grist Mill stood on the Rock Creek waterway two miles south of Markle, and these millstones came from that mill, which began in the 1840s. Storytellers relate that Indians from as far away as Ohio carried their grain there to be ground into meal. In 2000, the family of Susette Mitchell Middleton owned the land where the stones were found.
