Michigan's state forests and state parks both give the public opportunities to enjoy forests, but they are managed differently. State forests are actively managed by professional foresters and wildlife biologists to maintain forest health, provide animal habitats, support recreation, and produce resources such as wood, gravel, oil, and gas. This management uses harvesting, prescribed burning, seeding and planting, soil stabilization, and wildfire prevention methods. State parks are preserved for public recreation and enjoyment, with campgrounds, picnic shelters, beaches, trails, and other outdoor recreation facilities, and park and recreation professionals maintain them while providing natural and cultural resources education and programs. The land here was dedicated in 1902 as one of Michigan's first state forests.
