Bear Run Natural Area is a protected 32-acre tract in Pennsylvania’s Bald Eagle State Forest that preserves a small stand of old-growth hemlock and tulip trees. Its importance lies in having escaped the extensive logging that reshaped much of Pennsylvania in the late 1800s, leaving behind a rare remnant of the forest that once covered the region. According to one account, the trees survived because loggers chose to leave the stand intact as a shaded resting place for themselves and their draft animals.
