Snyder-Middleswarth Natural Area is a 500-acre protected tract in Bald Eagle State Forest in central Pennsylvania, valued for preserving one of the state’s surviving stands of virgin forest. Bought by Pennsylvania in 1902 as part of a larger forest acquisition, it became Snyder-Middleswarth State Forest Park in 1921 and later a natural area within the state forest system. In 1967 it was named a National Natural Landmark for its outstanding relict forest of hemlock, birch, pine, and scattered oaks. About half the tract is virgin forest, with exceptionally large, old trees that survived in part because the valley was difficult to log.
