Chimney Peak is a 6,917-foot mountain in Olympic National Park near the head of the Elwha Valley, rising sharply above Enchanted Valley with especially dramatic local relief. First named Old Snowback in 1890 by Charles Barnes of the Seattle Press Expedition, it later took its official name from a chimney-like rock tower on the summit’s west side. The summit was first climbed in 1941 by Tolvo J. Nelson of the United States Geological Survey, and the Chimney itself was first ascended in 1970 by Mike Banner and Vern Johnson. Its cliffs feed streams draining toward both the Elwha and Quinault rivers, and the peak reflects the Olympics’ wet climate and glacially carved geology.
