In 1887, the words declared, “The day will come when our silence will be more powerful than the voices you are throttling today.” On the rear, John P. Altgeld, Governor of Illinois, granted an absolute pardon on June 26, 1893, to Samuel Fielden, Oscar Neebe, and Michael Schwab, saying the charges were of a personal character, that the record of the trial and the papers before him tended to show the trial was not fair, and that it was clearly his duty to act. The names listed on the rear of the base are Michael Schwab, who died June 29, 1898; Oscar Neebe, who died April 22, 1916; Samuel Fielden, who died February 7, 1922; August Spies; Adolph Fischer; Albert R. Parsons; Louis Lingg; and George Engel.
