Grand Ave. School was founded in 1928 as a grammar school for grades one through eight serving the African American children of Nogales. In 1943, its name was changed to Frank A. Reed School in honor of former student Frank A. Reed, who died in action during World War II. The school closed in September 1952 because of desegregation in the Arizona school system. Its teachers were Lena Martin, principal from 1928 to 1952, Florence Mills from 1928 to 1942, Willa Hudson from 1942 to 1943 and 1945 to 1947, and Mildred Simpson Bennett from 1944 to 1945 and 1947 to 1952. Its uniqueness came from its African and Mexican heritages, and though segregated, it produced outstanding students who became leaders of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
