This area included numerous forts and garrisons: Joseph Berry's Fort at West Bath; Col. Noble's Fort at Pleasant Cove, built in 1734 as a stockade with a guard house at each corner and another within the enclosure, whose protection farmers needed to work their fields; Clarke + Lake's Fort at Spring Cove; Arrousic Fort at Manaskoux; John Watt's Fort at Green Point; Samuel Denny's Fort at Butler's Cove; a garrison also built by Col. Noble at Georgetown when danger from Indians was extreme; a fort at Cox's Head, where a brick fort and barracks for 105 soldiers and four cannon was constructed in 1812; Fort St. George at Sabino Head, built by the Popham Colony in 1607; Fort Popham at Hunniwall's Point, also the site of an earlier fort built about 1744 with a blockhouse and one four pound cannon, where soldiers were on duty when Arnold came by in 1775 and one served as pilot to guide the fleet up the Kennibec; Fort Baldwin on Sabino Hill, a modern twentieth century fort built in 1905 with batteries, administration building, storehouse, hospital, guardhouse, and wharf concealed to look like a peaceful wooden knoll; Fort Sagadahoc at Stage Island; and Fort Ancient Augusta at Small Point Harbor, built by Dr. Noyer in 1718, one hundred feet square, to protect inhabitants from Indians, with traces of its foundations remaining.
