Jacob Lake Lookout Tower, in northern Arizona’s North Kaibab Ranger District, preserves the era when forest protection relied on staffed fire lookouts. Built in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the 80-foot Aermotor steel tower is topped by a small metal cab from which lookouts watched for smoke across the surrounding forest. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it remains both a preserved New Deal-era structure and a clear illustration of early wildfire detection in the Kaibab region. Visitors can climb the tower and see an Osborne Fire Finder, the instrument once used to help locate fires.
