A nearby mine supplied coal to the large Wheeling Steel mill until an explosion here on 28 April 1924 caused the third worst mine disaster in state history. One hundred nineteen miners, many natives of Poland, Italy, and Greece, were killed, and there were no survivors. The disaster led to mine safety measures such as rock dusting and self-rescuers.
