Nature
The Navesink Highlands are a line of low coastal hills in New Jersey along the south shore of Raritan Bay whose modest elevations still rise strikingly above the surrounding landscape. Their highest summits include Crawford Hill in Monmouth County and the seaward headlands at Mount Mitchill, forming the highest headlands on the United States East Coast south of Maine. Built from uplifted coastal plain sediments and shaped by glacial rebound and resistant geologic layers, the range has remained above nearby lowlands. The Highlands have also served scientific and military purposes and are now prized for scenery, recreation, and historic sites that connect natural and human history.
