Mount Shaw, in eastern New Hampshire, is the 2,990-foot highest summit of the Ossipee Mountains and part of the Ossipee ring-dike complex, the eroded remains of a Cretaceous stratovolcano formed about 125 million years ago. The ancient circular volcanic structure, roughly 9 miles across, remains visible on maps and satellite images, and Mount Shaw is one of its most prominent surviving features. Though lower than many White Mountains peaks, its 2,330 feet of topographic prominence make it notably independent and visually commanding. Within the Castle in the Clouds estate, its slopes drain into two river systems, both ultimately reaching the Gulf of Maine.
