Built in 1888 and originally located on Orient Point about a mile from the tip end of the island as School District No. 1, this schoolhouse was affectionately called the "Down Neck Schoolhouse." It was abandoned as a school in 1930. Its original cupola was destroyed by the hurricane of 1938. In 1949, the Oysterponds Historical Society acquired it, moved it to its present site, and restored it.
