Tumala Mountain
Nature
Tumala Mountain is a 4,773-foot peak in Oregon’s Clackamas Foothills near Mount Hood, within Mount Hood National Forest and not far from Estacada. In 2007, the Board on Geographic Names renamed it from Squaw Mountain because that earlier name was considered offensive. The new name, Tumala, comes from Chinook Wawa and means “tomorrow” or “afterlife.”
