The Shoe Bar Ranch headquarters stood on the first ranch in Hall County, begun in the 1880s by pioneer cattlemen T.S. Bugbee and O.H. Nelson. This residence was built about 1884 for J.K. Zimmerman of Kansas City, a nearsighted owner who was wary of surprise visitors and therefore included only one outer door. Its adobe bricks were made nearby, and its tamped clay walls are 24 inches thick. At this headquarters, citizens met on May 4, 1890, and organized Hall County's local government.
