Safeway entered the Wheaton community in 1951 with a supermarket at 11215 Georgia Avenue. It was among the first to offer free parking, refrigerated produce, and air conditioned "Cool Shopping Comfort." In 1968, to better serve customers, the Georgia Avenue location was rebuilt as a new store featuring a barrel-roof design, regarded at the time as the area's premier shopping experience. As Wheaton urbanized, a third store opened at this location in 2013 with an Urban Lifestyle design, continuing to serve the evolving community with the company's known quality of products and service.
