The Appalachian Clubhouse stood at the center of a resort community here, one of many southern Appalachian resorts that prospered in the early 20th century. The Little River Lumber Company promoted the area for development while it was logging the surrounding hillsides, and in 1910 fifty acres were deeded to civic and business leaders who hoped to create a sportsman’s club. Over time the club grew more social, drawing many of Knoxville’s commercial and civic elite. The clubhouse also served as a hotel for members and their guests, functioning as the social hub that linked Daisy Town, Millionaire’s Row, and Society Hill, and many former residents came to call the whole area Clubtown.
