The Bortz Log House, built in the late 1700s, was for many years one of only three buildings in what later became Wescosville. It first stood near Henry Bortz's two-story stone inn on the old stage road and may originally have served as the inn's kitchen. Typical of small homes built by German families in the area before they could afford larger stone houses, it was a warm, comfortable kind of building common in the 1700s, usually finished with clapboard or shiplap siding, which the Bortz house still retains, with its logs exposed only under the porch roof. In the early 1800s it was moved a short distance west of the hotel, and sometime between 1810 and 1820 a frame addition created one more room upstairs and one downstairs. It remained a family home for much of its existence along Hamilton Boulevard until it faced demolition to make room for a new building at 4979 Hamilton Blvd. In 1989 it was moved to Wescosville Park for preservation, and it has since been restored to resemble its early appearance, including a four-square garden of colonial kitchen and medicinal plants near the kitchen.
