Built in 1874 by the E. W. Perry Clothing Store, 124 North Howard is the oldest two-story building on the square and remained home to that business until 1922. The Richmond Shoe Company occupied it from 1922 to 1938, and the Hyde Food Service Company, now known as Hy-Vee, later operated there for 18 years before leaving the square entirely. Lawyers, dentists, and doctors used the upper story for nearly 100 years, with large second-floor windows providing natural light to their offices. After a 1941 fire destroyed the second story at 112 North Howard, this double-front building became the square's tallest and oldest, and in 1956 Harrison's moved in from that earlier location and added the building's all-brick front.
