Fremont Peak, on Wyoming’s Continental Divide at the boundary of Fremont and Sublette counties, is the state’s third highest mountain and the Wind River Range’s second highest after Gannett Peak. Named for explorer John C. Frémont, it was climbed by Frémont, Charles Preuss, and Johnny Janisse during an August 1842 expedition after an earlier attempt that included Kit Carson. The party mistakenly believed it to be the highest mountain in the Rocky Mountains. Its wild setting spans the Fitzpatrick and Bridger wilderness areas and includes the Upper Fremont Glacier. Though a noted climbing goal, its remoteness, steep ascent, and rapidly changing weather make it a serious undertaking.
