Besek Mountain, also called Black Mountain, is a narrow traprock ridge southeast of Meriden in central Connecticut and part of the Metacomet Ridge. Its nearly continuous cliffline, prominent views, Black Pond, Besek Lake, and the lower eastern tier known as Powder Ridge make it both a scenic landmark and a recreation area. Formed from basalt laid down near the end of the Triassic Period and later tilted by faulting, the ridge creates varied microclimates that support uncommon plant communities and provide an important route for migrating raptors. It has also figured in local recreation, conservation efforts, and the failed 1970 Powder Ridge Rock Festival.
