Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel's original Flamingo Hotel stood here from December 26, 1944 until December 14, 1993. The hotel had 77 rooms, including Siegel's notorious “Bugsy Suite,” sometimes called the “Presidential Suite.” Its top-floor suite reflected unusual security concerns: the windowpanes were bullet proof, and although there was only one entrance, there were five possible exits, including a hidden ladder from the hallway closet to a basement tunnel leading to an underground garage where Siegel allegedly kept a chauffeured getaway car waiting at all times. Those precautions did not save him, however, because on June 20, 1947, 300 miles from Las Vegas, he was killed in a hail of gunfire by unknown assailants at the Beverly Hills mansion of his girlfriend, Virginia Hill. After his death, The Flamingo changed ownership three times, including its final sale from Kirk Kerkorian to the Hilton Hotels Corporation in 1970.
