The culmination of the Camden, AR. and the Red River, LA. campaigns was an effort to capture Texas, with two Union armies intended to join at Shreveport and move west, but Gen. Steele was defeated in AR. and Gen. Banks in LA. The wounded from the Battle of Prairie De Ann were brought into Washington, AR., where homes, churches, and businesses were filled. Seventy-four Confederate dead are buried here, known only to God. Confederate troops were commanded by Gen. Sterling Price and included Arkansas forces under General J.F. Fagan, Indian Territory forces under Colonel Tandy Walker, Missouri forces under General J.S. Marmaduke, and Texas forces under General Samuel B. Maxey and General R.M. Gano.
