On the 28th of May 1866, Laura Foster, described as a beautiful but frail girl, was decoyed from her father's house at German Hill in Caldwell County to a place in Wilkes County and was murdered. Tom Dula, also known as Tom Dooley, was later hanged for her murder. She was buried on the banks of the Yadkin River on the farm of John Walter Winkler.
