Osage Hills is a hilly region of northern Oklahoma spanning Osage County and parts of nearby counties, forming the southern extension of Kansas’s Flint Hills. Known for broad rolling hills, Cross Timbers, and some of the largest surviving tallgrass prairie in the Great Plains, it remains a defining Oklahoma landscape. Historically, much of the area was the last reserve of the Osage people, and its rugged terrain later sheltered outlaws and illicit activity into the twentieth century. Oil transformed the region after the Nellie Johnstone No. 1 well struck oil near present-day Bartlesville on April 15, 1897, and Osage mineral rights brought the tribe substantial wealth.
