Eldorado Canyon State Park, south of Boulder near Eldorado Springs, was established in 1978 and includes both the developed Inner Canyon and the less developed Crescent Meadows. The canyon’s history stretches from its first known Ute inhabitants to later settlers drawn by gold, farmland, and the warm artesian springs that helped Eldorado Springs grow into a resort community in the early twentieth century. Its cliffs also became famous for Ivy Baldwin’s tightrope crossings and for the Crags Hotel before its 1912 fire. Today the canyon is especially renowned for rock climbing, with more than 1,000 technical routes, as well as trails, creekside recreation, and striking ancient geology.
