In 1957, Eufaula citizens supported a bond issue that included construction funds to relocate and build a new Van Buren High School facility, and the campus was completed that same year and used continuously until May 1970. During the 1970-71 school year, total city-wide desegregation was in place, and black and white students attended Eufaula High School together. The building is now used by the City of Eufaula as a multi-purpose facility. On December 31, 1961, the Eureka Social Club sponsored a ceremony at Van Buren High School honoring Dr. T.V. McCoo for fifty-two years of service as a beloved physician and civic leader, and at that event Dr. W. D. Moorer, chairman of the Eufaula School Board, announced that the school would be renamed T.V. McCoo High School. Born in Glennville, Alabama, in 1883, Thomas Vivian McCoo graduated from Leonard Medical School at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, and in early 1909, following his marriage to Gertrude Coffee, he began practicing medicine in Eufaula, where he served as a physician for almost fifty years. He was a Mason, a member of the First African Baptist Church, where he headed the Board of Trustees for forty years, and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. After his death in 1967, Joel P. Smith, editor of The Eufaula Tribune and a Eufaula School Board member, said that McCoo was not only a competent physician who rendered invaluable service to the suffering, but also a dedicated civic and religious leader for many years.
