The Linden Oak is a white oak tree, Quercus alba, locally known by a name whose origin is unknown. It is the fourth largest of its species in Maryland and the largest in Montgomery County. Recognized in Maryland's Bicentennial year of 1976, the tree is more than 250 years old and was a seedling 25 years before George Washington was born. A symbol of the state of Maryland, it stands over 95 feet tall with a crown spread greater than 132 feet. It survived the American Revolution, and in 1973 it was saved from destruction during Metro construction by Idamae Garrott, who later served eight years on the Montgomery County Council, eight years in the Maryland House of Delegates, and eight years in the Maryland Senate.
