The National Naval Medical Center in Washington, D.C., completed in 1940, was built under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Secretary of the Navy Charles Edison, with Rear Admiral Ross T. McIntire serving as Surgeon General of the Navy, Rear Admiral Ben Moreell as Chief of the Bureau of Yards and Docks, Frederic W. Southworth as architect, Paul P. Cret as consulting architect, and John McShain as builder. Its tower and view have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior.
