The Bethesda Trolley Trail in southern Montgomery County follows much of the former streetcar corridor between Bethesda and Rockville, linking modern neighborhoods, commercial areas, and transit stations along a 5.9-mile route. Its roots reach back to 1891, when the Tennallytown and Rockville Railroad began service to Bethesda, later extended to Rockville by 1900 with full service in 1904. Streetcar operations ended in 1935, and buses replaced them. Plans to convert the abandoned right-of-way into a trail emerged in 1978, but construction advanced slowly through the 1990s and 2000s because of opposition, funding problems, and bridge delays. The result is a layered north-south route built from rail remnants, bridges, sidewalks, and side paths.
