Petersen Rock Garden in Central Oregon is a four-acre handmade landscape and museum created by Danish immigrant Rasmus Petersen beginning in 1935 at his family home. Using rocks gathered within an 85-mile radius, he built miniature stone castles, churches, cottages, and monuments inspired by both his native country and American symbols, including a replica of the Statue of Liberty. Set among bridges, streams, ponds, and natural plantings, the site became a classic roadside attraction that once drew about 150,000 visitors a year. After Petersen’s death in 1952, preservation became difficult, yet the garden later reopened, was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and remains a distinctive work of vernacular creativity.
