The first bridge over the navigable waters of the Merrimac River opened to travel on November 26, 1792, after being built in seven months under the direction of Timothy Palmer. It was rebuilt as a suspension bridge in 1810, rebuilt again in 1828, and maintained as a toll bridge until 1868. In 1909 it was rebuilt again by the Commissioners of Essex County.
