Market Square Tea Burning
Newburyport, Massachusetts
History
7
When the British Parliament in 1773 imposed a tax on tea imported into the American Colonies, the act was widely resented, and in indignation people brought tea to Market Square and burned it. In 1910, a few people still living testified that they had heard the story from eyewitnesses to the event.
