Maudslay State Park in Newburyport, Massachusetts, preserves a layered landscape along the Merrimack River where colonial travel routes, a former ferry landing, private estate grounds, and native woodland all meet. Once part of Newbury’s Upper Woods, the area later became the Maudesleigh estate of Frederick Strong Moseley, developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with formal gardens, greenhouses, and substantial architecture. After the estate declined and most buildings disappeared, the Commonwealth acquired the property in 1985. Today the park is known for its old white pines, extensive mountain laurel, surviving estate features, and renewed river ecology, including nesting bald eagles.
