Newburyport Harbor Front Range Light, built in 1873 at Bayley’s Wharf, was one of a paired set of range lights that guided ships safely into Newburyport Harbor by aligning with the Rear Range Light. Created after earlier privately maintained lights proved vulnerable and Congress funded a public replacement in 1872, it later moved in 1964 to the Merrimack River Coast Guard Station. The thirty-five-foot circular steel tower was altered as navigation changed, including electrification in 1933, automation in 1952, and a later height extension that was eventually removed. Though no longer active, it remains a visible daymark and part of the harbor’s maritime legacy.
