In 1838, the honorable Mr. A.P. Edgerton, agent for the Hicks Land Company of New York, erected this building as his headquarters, from which he sold land to the first settlers of this community. It later became the property of the building and loan company, which in 1989 deeded it to the Johnson Memorial Library. The building was then moved to the library site, and a memorial gift from William and Lyndall Coulter enabled the library directors to renovate this historic property for appropriate use.
