Jones Mountain
Nature
Jones Mountain is a 13,218-foot summit in central Colorado's Collegiate Peaks of the Sawatch Range, within San Isabel National Forest west of Buena Vista and just east of the Continental Divide. Rising steeply above the south fork of Cottonwood Creek, it gains more than 1,800 feet in a mile and dominates the terrain near Cottonwood Pass and Chaffee County Road 306. Runoff from its slopes feeds tributaries of Cottonwood Creek and ultimately the Arkansas River. The mountain's official name is recognized by the United States Board on Geographic Names, and its alpine subarctic climate brings snowy winters, cool summers, and frequent late-summer monsoon storms.
