Mount Yale, a fourteen-thousand-foot peak in Colorado’s Collegiate Peaks of the Sawatch Range, stands in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness within San Isabel National Forest near Buena Vista. The twenty-first highest mountain in the state, it was named for Elihu Yale as part of a regional tradition of honoring universities on nearby summits. A Harvard research team led by Josiah Whitney first climbed it, naming the taller neighboring peak Mount Harvard and the slightly lower summit after Whitney’s alma mater. Known for its broad, rocky upper slopes, Mount Yale became a popular non-technical fourteener and the focus of a playful rivalry with nearly equal-height Mount Princeton.
