Sunnyslope Mountain, or S Mountain, is a prominent rocky hill in north Phoenix whose enormous white 150-foot letter S has made it a landmark on the Valley of the Sun skyline. Visible from as far as thirty miles away, the mountain is closely associated with the surrounding Sunnyslope district and especially with Sunnyslope High School. School traditions have long reinforced that bond, with freshmen repainting the letter each year and the freshman football team outlining it with red flares after homecoming. In 2004, students temporarily changed the S to a J to honor Josh Conard. Its recognition on the Phoenix Historic Property Register reflects both visual prominence and community meaning.
