Joseph R. Walker, an American trail-blazer, left the San Joaquin Valley through this pass in 1834. The area was later traversed by topographer Edward M. Kern during the Fremont expedition of 1845, and the Kern River was named for him. After 1860, the pass became a mining freight route to Owens Valley.
