Owens Peak Wilderness is a 73,767-acre protected area on the eastern face of California’s Sierra Nevada, established by Congress in 1994 through the California Desert Protection Act. Centered on 8,445-foot Owens Peak and crossed by the Pacific Crest Trail, it is significant as a meeting point of the Great Basin, Mojave Desert, and Sierra Nevada ecoregions. That overlap creates varied terrain, springs, and diverse plant communities from creosote scrub to cottonwood, oak, juniper-pinyon woodland, sagebrush, and gray pine. Mule deer, golden eagle, and prairie falcon live here, prehistoric occupation is evidenced across the landscape, and restoration work since 1992 has repaired damage from old roads.
